What makes Galloways an eco friendly printing service?

Posted in: Opinion

We’re not just friendly here at Galloways, we’re eco friendly.

We know how important our environmental responsibilities are, and that’s why we’re committed to producing high-quality print. We make sure to do this without a high cost to the earth. Everything we print here at Galloways is produced sustainably with environmental protection in mind. We are even recognised as a carbon-balanced printer.

Because we work with so much paper, inks, and state-of-the-art machinery, we have comprehensive waste management procedures throughout our premises. These aim to reduce both energy and waste levels. We recycle responsibly everything we can, and we’re working to minimise using what we can’t recycle.

We’ve got a few tricks up our sleeves that make us one of the most environmentally friendly printing companies around. Our green choices are your green choices.

Eco-friendly printers will always use sustainably-sourced paper, and always, always, recycle.

We’re proud to partner with The World Land Trust organisation. To date, the Carbon Balanced Print and Paper programme has enabled WLT to offset over 250,000 tonnes of CO2. Our World Land Trust Carbon Balanced Certification is just one part of our strategy to reduce our environmental impact.

We also use paper from these forests bears the FSC’s Chain of Custody Certification, which guarantees that the paper came from a sustainably managed forest. We use carbon balanced paper and packaging companies Antalis and Denmaur who align with the FEC’s ethos. They are assessed according to The 10 FSC Principles, including maintaining or enhancing the social and economic wellbeing of workers, and helping maintain or enhance the social and economic wellbeing of local communities.

What are our eco-friendly printing products?

Paper is amazing! It’s one of the world’s most sustainable products; renewable, biodegradable, and 100% recyclable, and in an average year, the UK goes through about 12.5 million tonnes of it. For perspective, the trees needed to produce that much paper would cover an area roughly the size of Wales. Paper contributes to around 20% of UK waste and of course the more we waste, the more demand for paper. Deforestation is disastrous for the planet. Anyone who has read the data can tell you of the awful consequences. It’s important that with this knowledge, we choose sustainably-sourced paper, every time.

Recycled Paper

Producing recycled paper uses up to 70% less energy consumption than virgin paper. It also uses less water. Most of the energy used in paper production is in the pulping process, and as paper can be recycled back into paper as many as seven times, it’s easy to see why eco-friendly printers will always use recycled paper, wherever possible.

Carbon Balanced Paper

If you’re looking for ways to lower your carbon footprint, and a greener path to tread, choosing carbon balanced paper is a way to meet, and exceed, environmental policy targets effectively, and affordably.

In 2005, the international World Land Trust, established its Carbon Balanced Programme. Working with partner organisations and local communities around the globe the charity protect the world’s most biologically significant and threatened habitats, acre by acre.

Using carbon balanced paper funds the protection and preservation of forests and habitats, endangered species and wildlife, and is an effective method of fighting climate change, and lowering your carbon impact.

Technology

Technology has undoubtedly shaped the world we live in. The mining of rare-earth minerals necessary for technological advancement has a negative impact on our planet. Yet new technologies have in turn led to new methodologies, meaning our world of printing processes operates cleaner, more efficiently, and with greater environmental awareness.

Chlorine-based bleaches were once used for printing. Methane and ozone releasing into the air ended up being the result of that, harming the environment Now printing presses use less power and require fewer chemicals, which is helping us provide a cleaner, greener, print.

Our printing press is the most efficient in the world (we’re very proud of that!) and we have carbon balanced (offset) the equivalent of 207 tonnes of CO2. This will enable World Land Trust to protect and restore 39,537m2 of threatened tropical habitat.

Print On Demand

What if there was a way to remove waste from your marketing material and printed paper products? At Galloways, there is. Our web to print option allows you to print exactly what you need, when you need it. We won’t waste your print materials. The environmental impact of your print job is smaller, and the cost is lower.

Printing and a sustainable future

The printing industry has long held a reputation of having a negative impact on the environment, but it is doing its bit to create sustainable print solutions.

Print is tangible, impactful and creates a strong, emotional response in its reader. With 28% of consumers (and 50% of Gen Z consumers)* stopping purchasing certain brands because of ethical or sustainability concerns, a sustainable future for print is a bright future for everyone.
