coffee table book

There Is no finish line

Posted in: Case Study

The brief

Leading Manchester creative agency, Studio OBI, were briefed to create a coffee-table style book to commemorate the 50th anniversary of  The Morson Group.

The piece took a story-book format, charting the business from it’s inception and documenting it’s growth over the years with a focus on the every changing face of technology embraced along the way. The story was told directly by the people who built the company, featuring memoirs from staff right across the business, including tales of the past and personal views on just what has made Morson the company it is today and the strides made to stay at the top of the industry.

With a fascinating history and an impressive list of accomplishments to be showcased, we knew the book would be rich in content.

Our response

From the outset, we worked alongside the design studio to devise with the best way bring the design to life, resulting in a stunning piece of work.

The final specification was a 270x240mm case bound book made from GF Smith Colorplan Sapphire with Buckram Emboss finish, with a red cloth affixed to the spine, chosen to match Morson’s instantly recognisable corporate branding. The book consists of 316 pages of text, with a further seven 220x190mm tip in pages printed digitally utilising white ink on Colorplan Vermilion paper, adding complementary natural break points to the main content of the book.

To complete the luxurious feel, the case bound cover was gold foiled to the front and back cover, as well as along the spine of the book.

A project to remember

From the initial meetings with the designer at Studio OBI, we understood that this book needed to be special in line with the company it was it was representing – particularly for their 50th anniversary in business. It was fantastic to be involved from the outset, and as a result we were able to advise on paper weights, pantone of stocks to match corporate branding and the emboss finish for the cover.

To give the client a true flavour of what to expect, we produced digital mock-ups through the early design stages so the design could be tweaked and amended as well as using these copies for sign off by the end user. Given there was so many finishes processes, as well as the sheer size of the book, we were delighted to find out the book exceeded all expectations – it’s a piece we’re truly proud of.

What the client said:

The designer at Studio OBI upon receiving his sample copies said:

‘I just received the book and its brilliant. Even better than I was expecting. Thank you for all advise and support.’
